[Update] Rockstar Support Claims PS3 3.61 Update Causing Overheating.


Unconfirmed reports via Rockstar support points to yet another problem for Sony. The recent 3.61 fimrware update that allowed consoles to get back online after nearly a month of downtime appears to be causing some issues for older hardware. Specifically, older “fat” models (60 GB and 80 GB) PS3s are shutting off in Noir as well as a growing number of other titles, with the machine ultimately “red lighting” and turning off.

While the original comment has now been removed from Rockstar’s support forums, the internet keeps things long after they’re deleted:

“We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models”

“Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or ‘Red Lighting’ after having installed 3.61.”

“This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to 2 hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed.”

    Mine is also freezing Fat 60 Gig model.

    This is flipping Bullshit – no problems before the update. Now…. Freeze after 10 mins of gameplay.

    FIX THIS SONY OR ELSE THERE IS ANOTHER CLASS ACTION COMING YOUR WAY.

    I actually talked to Sony Corporate’s customer service and after 30 minutes they still couldn’t do anything. Give me an option to send back my awesome PS3 and wait 2-3 weeks AND pay $99 for the new slim model. Also you lose everything. So after asking the man over and over  why they couldn’t do anything about all of my save data and everything, he says Best Buy’s Geek Squad can do a data retraction at a base price of $49 I think and it goes up depending on how much data you have but that he “didn’t recommend it”. Yeah, because it wasn’t Sony.

    So I had to go buy one of those new shitty PS3s last night and am taking my 60gb to Best Buy today to have them try to get all of my data off. Wish me luck since Sony does not give ONE shit about their customers and the type of frustration this causes. Not acknowledging or having service available for a problem that is NOT the consumer’s fault.

    Awesome job, Sony. I’m so glad I stayed reliable to you. Definitely made it worth it, for sure.

    I have never had an issue with my PS3 (60 gig) and I have had mine from day one! I did the 3.61 update and ten minutes later while playing NBA 2k11 it died. (red blinking lights). I have called Sony and argued for 2 days and they refused to acknowlege the problem. I am hopeful that the more of us that speak up, the more likely Sony will stop ignoring us. If anyone has any luck moving forward please let me know and I will do the same.

    Exactly the same here ! Was playing Black Ops last night following the recent firmware update and 30 mins of play.. pooof black screen and PS3 flashing with red / yellow light. My system is the older fat 80GB model.

    This problem is on Sony I was playing ncaa 11 when mine went down and I have the 60gb ps3

    I have the fat 60gb version and it’s been fine the whole time I had it. I update to this and not even a week later, the yellow/red light of death. I talk to Sony twice and they tell me I have to pay $129 to repair and all my data would be lost. I talk to corporate telling them about this article and he says he hasn’t heard anything about that but that he doubts it’s because of the update. That all he can tell me is $129 to repair it and MAYBE the data will still be there or I can upgrade to a 120gb slim for $99 and they can get the stuck game out for free. FANTASTIC SONY.

      It’s really sad to sit here and watch the whole Sony implosion unfold. “Doubt it’s because of the update” is yet more of the same from Sony — denial. Of course, Sony has a long history of screwing over customers at every chance they get so how they’re handling this situation isn’t all that surprising. Still, disheartening nonetheless.

    Everything worked fine before 3.61, now (after 3.61) black ops freezes randomly and the ps3 doesn’t shutdown properly or eject the disc. When turning back on the system doesn’t even recognize the disc and responds sluggishly to commands, such as ejecting randomly 3 mins after the command was issued.

    Looks like it’ll be a while still before I can go back to enjoying my ps3 prior the hacking…

      being dicks, that’s what they’re doing, it’s almost been 2 weeks and I got the same reply as all of you ie it’s My fault and I need to pay out of the nose for money I don’t have for something I never broke, I only browsed the internet to check My emails and that happened shortly after the update, they deleted My posts on facebook when I mentioned this and that we won’t stand for it, I’ve sent an email to watchdog and trading standards and advise others here to do the same, if sony doesn’t like anything it’s bad publicity and if they carry on denying this then it’s only gonna be a case of when.

      This is a time bomb sony, either fix this issue now or wait for it to explode in your face, you already lied to us about being hacked and lost a great deal of users, can you afford to do the same again with this issue you caused?, I’m not paying shit and Me and everyone else expects a free replacement.

    Well you know what after I thought it couldn’t get any worse with Sony I actually think this is true. My PlayStation (60GB) has been in very good condition since I bought it and is kept in a well ventilated place and regularly cleaned. I have never played this new Rockstar game and suddenly it goes poof and won’t work…the infamous yellow light. A little sick of Sony at the moment.
