Rumor: Apple To Discontinue 17″ MacBook Pro; Release All New Hybrid MacBook Models

We’ve heard it time and time again over the past year and today will take that Air like MacBook Pro rumor to a new level, by deleting the 17″ model from the line of oh-so-sexy Cupertino laptops. Since sometime early last year, I can remember the rumors start to break through the flood gates regarding Apple to change up the design on their MacBook Pro line to match the body of Apple’s popular MacBook Air models. Something I can’t recall hearing is Apple would completely discontinue their larger 17″ model to release a whole new MacBook line combining the best of both siblings.

This is exactly what research analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities is predicting. He has given us accurate information on Apple releases in the past and today he releases a new report saying Apple will go the way of one line of laptops and that they will delete the 17″ MacBook Pro in the process.

“Apple’s Mac business in 2Q12 will be boosted by several factors. Three of which are: (1) Mountain Lion, which integrates iOS features with Mac OS, Apple TV’s interaction function, will be launched in June; (2) upgrading to Ivy Bridge; and (3) back-to-school demand. We forecast Apple will sell 5.32mn units of the Mac series (up 28.5% QoQ and 35.2% YoY) in 2Q12, making it the main growth driver.

We also predict Apple will roll out a fully new MacBook model in early 3Q12, boasting strong performance and easy carryability by combining the advantages of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

While adding new products, Apple is likely to stop making the 17” MacBook Pro this year due to falling shipments, in order to maintain a lean product line strategy.”

Kuo estimates that the 13″ Pro offering is Apple’s top seller at 1.5 million units, while the 17″ only sold 50,000, leading us to believe it is in Apple’s best interested to discontinue the beast. On the smaller end, the 11″ and 13″ Air sold equal amounts of units and are not exceeding Apple’s expectations, only meeting them. This is due to Solid State drives not being available in large enough quantities to satisfy customer’s demand.

With the discontinuation of the 13″ White MacBook a while back, it makes sense to have a unified design offering. But if Apple chooses to have one design across all models, dropping the Pro and Air titles, will we see the lower end MacBook Air’s deleted or will they gain a massive internal overall to keep them up to Apple’s standards. Kuo’s predictions can work, but there is reason we have a Pro line as well as a lower netbook style offering – people want options.

Do you think it is in Apple’s best interest to delete the 17″ model? If people want to go big, should their only Cupertino offering be that in the way of an iMac? Your guess is as good as ours, I love the slim Air-like look for the Pro line, but dropping the Pro and Air names to offer 11″ – 15″ models seems to be a stretch for me. It is expected that the Mac Pro is to die off, so it might be possible for the MacBook Pro to see the same fate. Will we be left with the Mac Mini, an 11″ – 15″ MacBook line and two sizes of iMac? Apple might be cleaning house, but it would be sad to see these monster computers nixed from the Apple Store.

Yes it is true. When i went in a Store they told me that Apple has discontinue the product. You can get that if it is in the stock, but the news is sad, but true…
